29. Display multiple Outlook windows at one time. Perhaps you want to see your calendar while looking at an email. While in your Inbox, right-click on your Calendar (either on the Folder List or the icon) and select "Open in New Window." Outlook will open your Calendar in a separate window, which you can resize and move to where it's most convenient for you, while still being able to switch back to the Inbox. This is especially useful if you have a large monitor or dual monitors.
27. Strike a balance on when to schedule a meeting. If you schedule a meeting too far out, you'll get a bunch of cancellations and requests to reschedule as you get closer - or you'll just get trumped by someone higher up. If you wait to schedule a meeting until the last minute, it's hard to find a block of time when most people are readily available. So it's best to schedule around one to three weeks in advance. Anything sooner than that or further than that is fraught with scheduling challenges and conflicts.
23. Always send or request an agenda and include it in the text portion of the appointment or include as an attachment. I don't make people confirm that things are correct; I ask them to let me know if there is a change. Also make sure you get directions and map it out well in advance of trying to run out the door. I look at my calendar for the next day before I leave work and make sure I'm ready to roll on everything. Confirm with attendees, too, when it's your meeting. Open the original meeting request, select Actions, and then New Message to Attendees.
3. Create a private calendar to post appointments you don't want others to see. We are all used to email folders, where we file email. Most people, however, have never created a calendar folder. A calendar folder IS a new calendar. However, make sure the folder contains "Calendar Items" in the drop-down box. Give your new calendar a name such as "Kids Summer Schedule" or "Laura's personal calendar." To find all upcoming meetings with a particular person,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], go to that Contact's address card, select the Activities tab, and in the drop-down box, select Upcoming Tasks/Appointments. The people must be loaded in your personal Contacts list (not just your company's global address book) for this to work. If a meeting invitation is used, this feature is automatic, and you don't need to select the names.

If you have a change in your calendar but don't want to "rock the boat," you inconvenience more people the longer you wait. 10. Block out time to work. Sometimes you might want to actually schedule an appointment to WORK. To protect your time from others, schedule a Task on your Calendar (Outlook 2003). With the Task Pad view in the Calendar showing, click on a Task you'd like to complete. Hold the left mouse key down while you drag it to your calendar and release. An Appointment window will pop up, automatically inserting the task into the text portion of the appointment item. Fill in the time you want to work on the task on your calendar. Change the Show Time as field to Tentative, if desired. Save and close. The task will still be kept in your Task Pad, but now you've blocked out time on your calendar to work on it. NOTE: Do NOT put things you need to DO on your Calendar (that's what Tasks are for), because if you don't complete it, youll have to move it manually (not so with Tasks).
13. Do not accept a meeting invitation if the requestor can't state in one sentence the exact reason you are meeting,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. For example:
- To inform our department of changes in the holiday pay policy.
- To sell management on our division's plan to automate payroll processing.
- To brainstorm the best way to resolve the association's budget deficit.
- To determine realistic sales goals for each region for next year.

15. If updating a meeting already scheduled, send an update to the existing appointment. If you have already set up a meeting and invited participants,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sending an email about the meeting forces them to either copy and paste the additional information into the meeting or have two meeting blocks for the same event side by side on their calendars, forcing them to open two items to get complete information. If you need to add information, send out a meeting update. To contact meeting attendees with a reminder or other message, open the original meeting request, click the Actions menu, and select "New Message to Attendees."
26. Be considerate of those in other time zones. If you're in the Pacific Time zone, and some of your meeting participants are calling in from the east, a 2:00 meeting puts them into departure time. Realize that people may have childcare commitments at the end of the day; an afternoon meeting (or vice versa for early mornings on the west coast) can severely inconvenience folks and reduce the odds of attendance.
18. End meetings before the top or bottom of the hour. If you're the one scheduling the meeting, don't use the standard Outlook settings of hour or half hour blocks. If one meeting is from 1:00 to 2:00, immediately followed by another from 2:00 to 3:00, you will by default be late to your 2:00. So use either :15 or :45 start and end times, to allow transition time.
14. Send lengthy reading materials at least 48 hours in advance. Participants express frustration with wasting time in meetings reviewing materials that were just handed out. They don't have adequate time to digest the information and formulate questions. They could have reviewed that document while waiting in the doctor's office yesterday. Don't waste everyone's time by forcing them to sit there and read together like kindergarteners - their time is much too expensive.
4. Or, check your appointments as Private when you don't want others to read the text. Yes, you can! The Private box is a little, tiny box in the bottom right-hand side of your screen (Outlook 2003) when you create a new appointment. People who share your calendar will still see a block and that you're unavailable, but they can't read the appointment text.
22. Avoid meetings on Fridays. Many departments and teams just decide as an informal policy to schedule meetings Monday-Thursday if at all possible. Too many people try to take long weekends or duck out early, making scheduling and rescheduling a nightmare on these days, plus you'll end up with a lot of no-shows. I try to leave Fridays open for personal appointments. I find if I put a doctor's appointment in between business meetings, something always happens to derail one or the other. It's hard to get my mind switched between different realms as well.
25. For longer meeting, allow enough breaks. Give a break at least one break for every hour and 15 minutes, max. Let attendees know at the outset what to expect. If you keep rambling on, and they aren't sure when they'll get a bio break, they will just start getting up randomly and sneaking out. If you clearly state at the beginning, "We will meet from now until 10:00, and then we'll break until 10:10," etc. It is also common courtesy that if you're meeting over a lunch hour to provide food.
8. If someone does send an email wanting to meet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], convert it into an appointment. If your colleagues don't understand the meeting feature and insist on sending emails for appointments, you can quickly turn an email into a Calendar item. Right-click on the email,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], select Move to Folder, and then Calendar. A new appointment window automatically opens, containing your email and any attachments. Fill in the date, time, and details, and then Save and Close. The message is moved from the Inbox into the Calendar automatically. No more manual copying and pasting!
5. Use the Category box to indicate the project, team, or committee. Every time you schedule an appointment or accept a meeting invitation, indicate what project it's related to in the Category box. Use the Master Category List to add your labels. "Tag" each appointment with one or multiple categories. Then under the View menu, select Arrange by, Current View, By Category. The goal is to find career options that can satisfy as many of your interests (see step 1) as possible. When you find career options that fill most of your bucket list, you are on the right track.
Pretend you are going on vacation. Usually you would start with a destination in mind. Then you would book accommodations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], figure out what mode of transportation is going to get you there (maybe even plot the trip on your GPS), pack your things, etc. You do these things to maximize your odds of your vacation running smoothly and increasing your happiness. Why is it then that we put more planning into our vacations than we do our vocations?
Step 1: Identify your interests. You can use online interest inventories,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the easiest way is to keep a log of all the things you enjoy doing for the next 2 weeks. They do not have to be career-related. In fact, the secret to having a job you love is doing something you would do for free! Now the goal is for you to get paid for doing what you love, but start with your interests and not what you perceive as a lucrative vocation.
Step 3: Let's pretend you found a couple of really exciting careers opportunities. Now it's time to pack for your trip (aka, the Action Plan). Do you have the required skills and experience or do you need to take specialized training? Are there currently jobs in the field? What are your timelines for getting your goal? There are many other questions that will require answers and things you will have to plan for but a word to the wise;don't take shortcuts and have a solid plan before you invest any time or money into this endeavor.

When it comes to careers, some of us fall into opportunities while others never get the breaks. Most of us settle somewhere in-between. However, if you take the time to study how successful people get where they are, it is usually because they had a solid plan and they worked very,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], very hard to get where they are. Now when I say "successful people", I do not equate that with wealth. Success is a subjective measure that a person must establish for themselves.
I would like to begin by saying that I am not a snake oil salesman. I have no smoke and mirrors and no outrageous claims that you can make a gazillion dollars in a week by doing nothing. I can't even impress you with eloquent prose, a killer sales pitch or a shopping list of celebrity testimonials.
I have been working as a career practitioner for many years and the people that come into my office fall into one of two categories; 1.) those who do not have a job, and want one or 2.) those who have a job, but don't want the one they have. My job is to help them transition from where they are to where they want to be.
Before you start on your career journey, you need to know where you are going (what type of career are you pursuing) and how will you know when you get there (did you obtain your definition of success)? If you haven't figured these things out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you had better be prepared for a very tough trek through the wilderness.
I'll assume you have some ideas about where you want to go. If not, no worries,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], why not tag along for the ride with me a little longer and maybe things might become a little clearer?
Are you ready? Then let's begin.
I must warn you though. This process requires you to work hard and believe that you are worthy of happiness and success. If you can bring those things, I have the means to bring you the rest of the way.
Just as a GPS can save you from getting lost, here is a 5 step process that will help you plot your way through the labor market and hopefully get you to your destination in style.
So that's it. Five steps stand between where you are now and where you want to be. This is a proven, time honored process that gets results. Stick to this plan, put the required work into getting your goal and above all, do not give up and you will achieve success!
What does "success" mean to you? Is it happiness, security,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], contributing to society, power,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], popularity, mastering your craft or having more money than you know what to do with? Maybe you want it all.
Step 4: We'll skip ahead and assume you needed some career-specific training. While you are acquiring your technical skills do not forget to hone nine very important skills that will help you not only land your next job, but they are critical in getting your next promotion too. In no particular order the are; reading, writing, numeracy, critical thinking/problem solving, oral communication, document use/following instructions, teamwork, computer literacy and willingness to be a lifelong learner. These have been categorized as Essential Workplace Skills by the Government of Canada (Google it!). This is the fine tuning that will get you noticed over your competition-guaranteed!

Here’s to the dreamers, visionaries and risk takers! Here’s to the entrepreneurs!
Although at the time, I didn’t realize it, I began my apprenticeship as an entrepreneur when I was six and opened a neighborhood lemonade stand in Zion, Illinois. I didn’t know I was furthering my entrepreneurial life when making hand-printed fliers, advertising my services for babysitting, grass cutting and staging children’s magic shows - at the age of twelve. My younger years were full of rebellion, plotting and planning. Reading constantly and being somewhat of a loner, I found it very difficult to be engaged in my ‘boring’ classes. As evidenced by the high school reports cards that my brother gave me last year, the consensus of all my teachers was: “He is obviously intelligent, but his mind is constantly wandering and he just doesn’t pay attention.”
I now realize a few facts about myself. As a youngster, my mother, father and grandfather told me that - in order to be successful - I had to focus on doing one thing, instead of the vast array of careers and projects I wanted to tackle. Although I did not make that choice, bless them all, they supported me to follow my constantly changing plans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hobbies, projects and dreams. As the saying goes, “Entrepreneurs live out of the imagination instead of their memory.”
Even though I never thought about the meaning of the word “entrepreneur,” I was already formatted to follow this path as I plodded through four years of college and two more getting a Master’s degree. I then launched into being a professional actor, theatrical producer, lighting and costume designer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], stage director, clinical hypnotist and performer. Neither did I realize that I was an entrepreneur when I began conducting workshops on positive self-image training, motivation and creativity.
I always knew that I loathed being under someone’s thumb and told what to do. In other words, while I hated having a boss,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I enjoyed working with others on projects. I wanted to do what I wanted to do, take my ideas and turn them into reality and travel the world. I vowed I simply would not give up until I attained my goals. But there was this tiny voice in the back of my mind, whispering that the world did not support this scattered kind of thinking. Onward I went - taking risks, winning more than losing and learning, learning, learning.
My life models should have given me a hint. Benjamin Franklin, whom many consider America’s first entrepreneur, fascinated me. P.T Barnum captured my imagination as did the failures and triumphs of Thomas Edison. In college, I became absolutely fascinated with actor/writer/director/producer/ magician - Orson Wells.
Everything fell into place when I created “Quantum Leap Thinking” in 1982. In my opinion, entrepreneurs were very fortunate people - at least those who survived financially. My new heroes became Ray Kroc - the force behind McDonalds, along with Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos, Sam Walton, Mark Zukerberg, Martha Stewart and Oprah Winfrey.
My antenna is always on full alert, searching for those with the true entrepreneurial spirit who have not yet made it into the Fortune 500. I found one of the most sterling examples within a five-minute walk from my second home on St. Thomas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], USVI: Greg Engelhart and his wife Whitney. Earlier this year, they had just opened “Off the Grid,” the first Gourmet grill truck in the history of St. Thomas.
Greg’s passion is cooking. After knocking around after college, collecting a couple of impressive tattoos and working in a number of restaurants, he decided to go to culinary school at the age of 21. Upon graduation he journeyed to Las Vegas where he learned from the best,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], mentored by celebrity chef Andre Rochat. Greg then worked as chef on the Crystal Cruise line, traveled in Norway and Italy, and finally returned home to West Virginia. There he worked in the food and wine business, which took him back to Las Vegas where he worked for business magnate, Steve Wynn. Eventually he was hired as Andre Rochat’s head chef. Greg was clearly sharpening his gourmet skills. Finally, as he says,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “I had my first burst of entrepreneurship. I became a part-owner of a restaurant and, therefore, the pressure to succeed was much greater.” Then he met and married a beautiful model named Whitney, who shared his dreams.
They moved to St. Thomas with no plans in place. Within a short period of time, Greg was hired to ‘turn around’ a number of failing restaurants. After successfully completing this assignment, he became a partner in what is considered to be one of St. Thomas’s most prestigious restaurants: The Old Stone Farmhouse.
Just as he became bored with the routine and the quality of help, he took notice of the food truck revolution in the United States. Taking a huge financial risk, Greg designed a food truck and hired an Atlanta firm to build it. Although two months late, the equipment finally arrived on the island and the opening of the “Off the Grid” gourmet grill was scheduled. However, on December 26, 2012, Greg was told that, during the night, his truck had caught fire and burned to the ground.

After 48 hours of total shock,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Greg and Whitney faced the fact that they were totally broke. They sat down with pen and paper and made a list of the pros and cons: Should they leave the island or make it happen? With only a credit card in hand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they flew to Miami, where they scoured the online advertising website, Craig’s List, for a possible replacement. Greg told me that it felt like “Custer’s last stand.” They were out of options. Within three days, they found a garish, pink food truck. “We were going to make it happen,” he recalled passionately. “You have to see through the pink color and bent metal to visualize what the truck could be turned into.” They bought the truck, had it gutted, purchased a $5,000 generator, filled it with everything they might need and had it shipped it back to St. Thomas. Five sleepless days later, after working almost ‘round the clock’, the truck was rebuilt, repainted and properly equipped. “Off the Grid” officially opened. Susan and I were fortunate to be there on the opening day. The food was delicious, reasonably priced, and the service impeccable. Word immediately spread like wildfire. By the time we headed back home to Connecticut, their business was thriving. Greg now plans three more of these gourmet trucks in high traffic areas on St. Thomas and is thinking about creating “Off the Grid” on neighboring islands.
After studying entrepreneurs for years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], certain traits emerge. Entrepreneurs are curious, creative, flexible, adaptable, determined, open-minded, optimistic dreamers. They are accountable, passionate,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], disciplined and tenacious. Entrepreneurs say “No!” to the naysayers. They listen, learn constantly and have a sense of fairness when dealing with their vendors, customers, employees and partners.
If you have the instinct to be an entrepreneur, go for it. No one else will ever do it for you. If you have a child that displays the attributes of an entrepreneur, nurture and encourage him or her.
